About Shrunken American Bison, 4-5 ounce

Shrunken American Bison Leather in the versatile 4–5 oz weight showcases the bold texture and unmistakable character that make bison leather so highly sought after. The signature shrinking process tightens the grain to create an extremely pronounced “bubble” texture that runs across the surface of the hide, giving the leather striking depth and rugged visual character. Finished with a rich aniline treatment and waxed topcoat, the leather has a subtle shine that highlights the natural grain and adds a luxurious touch to its rugged appeal.

Cut as sides averaging 15–20 square feet and measuring approximately 1.6–2 mm (4–5 oz) thick, this American-made bison leather offers a medium temper that balances structure with workable flexibility. The chrome tannage enhances durability while maintaining the suppleness bison leather is known for, making it perfect for projects that require strength without stiffness. The bold bubble grain and rich finish make this leather an exceptional choice for handbags, chap and moto gear, footwear, saddle bags, western goods, and statement accessories. 

Produced by the same American tannery as our heavier 6–7 oz Shrunken American Bison, this version offers the same dramatic grain pattern in a lighter, more adaptable weight.

Leather is a natural product. We strive to keep new lots within size, color, and quality tolerance, but some hides may have slight variations in size or color, or have natural imperfections such as scars or small holes.

Hide sizes may vary. Leather square footage isn’t measured as a true length-by-width area — it’s based on the hide’s surface area before finishing or shrinkage. Tanneries calculate footage from the raw hide stage and stamp the size on the flesh (back) side of the hide. We use the measurements provided by the tannery, but some variation in actual size is normal.
