Conceria Walpier Buttero Leather is one of the most sought-after leathers in the world, and for good reason! Named after the Italian word for butter, Buttero has earned its reputation as one of the finest leathers on the market today. Meticulously crafted by Italy's renowned Conceria Walpier Tannery, Buttero is the culmination of centuries of Italian leather tanning mastery. As a proud member of the prestigious Pelle Vegetale Consortium, Conceria Walpier upholds strict standards to preserve the authentic art of vegetable tanning, infusing their leather hides with natural tree bark, tannins, and plant extracts unique to the Tuscany region of Italy.
Buttero leather is celebrated for its pristine and luxuriously smooth surface, rich colors, and incredible durability. The 7 ounce weight is ideal for heavier goods like structured bags, luggage, boots and footwear, chairs and furniture, strapping and belts, offering a firm yet supple temper that's ideal for elegant yet structured projects.
Buttero is a dream to work with. It cuts like butter, the edges burnish to a glossy shine, and it wet forms beautifully, holding its shape without losing the smooth, buttery finish that it's known for. The rich aniline colors are drum dyed and struck through, while the aniline finish helps the colors remaining true to their original hue even after extensive use and exposure to sunlight. Although the temper is initially firm, Buttero breaks-in beautifully, becoming softer and more pliable over time, eventually developing a gorgeous patina over years of faithful use.
Cut in double shoulders for maximum yield with minimal waste, Buttero hides are clean and smooth, free from defects, scars, or bug bites. The hides offer a large cutting surface that's usable from top to bottom, edge to edge. One of the finest Italian leathers in the world, Buttero is the perfect choice for premium leather goods, accessories, bags, wallets, belts, and footwear. Buttero’s versatility and timeless beauty make it a top choice for artisans seeking to craft heirloom-quality goods.
Leather is a natural product. We strive to keep new lots within size, color, and quality tolerance, but some hides may have slight variations in size or color, or have natural imperfections such as scars or small holes.
Hide sizes may vary. Leather square footage isn’t measured as a true length-by-width area — it’s based on the hide’s surface area before finishing or shrinkage. Tanneries calculate footage from the raw hide stage and stamp the size on the flesh (back) side of the hide. We use the measurements provided by the tannery, but some variation in actual size is normal.
