About Burnishable Veg Tan Buffalo Calf, 3 oz. | 3 Colors

Our Burnishable Veg Tan Buffalo Calf offers a rare balance of refinement, durability, and character that sets it apart from standard buffalo hides. Crafted from calf-grade buffalo, this smooth, aniline-finished leather combines the strength and tight grain of buffalo with the fine texture and luxurious hand of calfskin. Despite its modest thickness (1.1–1.3 mm), it maintains exceptional body and resilience, making it ideal for structured goods that require both beauty and endurance.

Burnishable Veg Tan Buffalo Calf hides are fairly large, averaging 9-14 square feet, with a large cutting surface with high yields. Vegetable-tanned for durability and beauty, this leather develops a gorgeous natural patina over time and responds beautifully to traditional hand-finishing techniques. Its medium temper allows it to wet form, crease, tool, and buff with ease, breaking in gracefully while retaining structure. Available in seven rich colors, it’s a versatile choice for footwear, handbags, linings, small leather goods, and accessories—a staple for any artisan’s workshop.

What is “Burnishable” Leather?

Burnishable leather is a vegetable-tanned leather that can be polished or buffed along its surface or edges to create a richer, darker tone and natural sheen. The term refers to its ability to “burnish,” or darken and smooth through friction—either from hand rubbing, machine burnishing, or simple wear over time. This process enhances the leather’s depth of color, highlights its grain, and contributes to a more refined, aged appearance unique to each piece.

Please Note

Leather is a natural product. We strive to keep new lots within size, color, and quality tolerance, but some hides may have slight variations in size or color, or have natural imperfections such as scars or small holes.

Hide sizes may vary. Leather square footage isn’t measured as a true length-by-width area — it’s based on the hide’s surface area before finishing or shrinkage. Tanneries calculate footage from the raw hide stage and stamp the size on the flesh (back) side of the hide. We use the measurements provided by the tannery, but some variation in actual size is normal.
