About Tooling Veg Tan Leather, Grade 1

This Natural Veg Tan Tooling Leather is the gold standard for vegetable tanned leather hides, trusted by artisans and leatherworkers around the world. Crafted from premium Grade 1 cow hides that have been carefully selected to have minimal imperfections, tanned using age-old veg tanning techniques, and then aniline finished for a smooth texture and medium-firm temper. This is leather in its purest, most natural state—ready to be tooled, carved, stamped, dyed, or wet-formed into heirloom-quality leather goods.

Our Natural Veg Tan Leather is cut in double shoulders averaging 10–15 square feet. Grade 1 hides have minimal scarring or imperfections, offering a very generous yield with almost no waste. Available in seven weights ranging from 4-5 oz up to 10-11 oz, these Natural Veg Tan double shoulders are ideal for a wide range of applications, from belts, straps, gun belts, holsters, sheaths, saddlery, footwear, bags, and luxury goods.

Does Veg Tan Leather Develop a Patina?

Yes, over time and exposure to the elements, natural veg tan darkens to a deep, rich brown, developing a gorgeous patina that enhances the unique character of your work. Many leather crafters and manufacturers seek out natural veg tan leather specifically because of the rich, natural patina that it develops.

Please Note

Leather is a natural product. We strive to keep new lots within size, color, and quality tolerance, but some hides may have slight variations in size or color, or have natural imperfections such as scars or small holes.

Hide sizes may vary. Leather square footage isn’t measured as a true length-by-width area — it’s based on the hide’s surface area before finishing or shrinkage. Tanneries calculate footage from the raw hide stage and stamp the size on the flesh (back) side of the hide. We use the measurements provided by the tannery, but some variation in actual size is normal.
